Executive Director, North Carolina Commission of Inquiry on Torture
Catherine Read is an experienced organizational leader, advocate and campaigner who moved to Raleigh in 2017 after 14 years in Washington D.C. Most recently, she served as Executive Director of the North Carolina Commission of Inquiry on Torture, a citizen driven truth commission the first state-based accountability effort of its kind. The Commission’s seminal report, Torture Flights: North Carolina’s Role in the CIA Rendition and Torture Program was released in Fall 2018. Prior to this, Catherine led the Washington, D.C. offices of two international human rights organizations; Crisis Action, whose D.C. office she established, and the Center for Victims of Torture. Catherine started her career in government affairs at the law firm DLA Piper and before moving to the U.S. spent a year working in the U.K. Parliament. Catherine is a member of the Advisory Council of the Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East at the Atlantic Council and in 2011 was named by Washingtonian Magazine as one of their “40 Under 40” lobbyists with the most influence in Washington.
