Ellie Finkelstein

Campaigner & News Editor

Ellie, from Toronto, Canada, joined the Freedom United team as a campaigner and news editor. In her undergraduate degree at McGill University, she was one of the published authors of a report that called on McGill University to address its history in transatlantic slavery, their legacies of colonialism, and how that informs institutional racism within the university. This body of work was picked up by the Canadian media and started a trend of Universities across New England and New France to address their colonial roots. From this experience, Ellie decided she wanted to continue exposing the truth about the horrific history of transatlantic slavery and how it has shaped much of our institutions and systems today. She then moved to the United Kingdom to complete her masters in Post Colonial Policy where she explored post-colonial issues like the weaponisation of intellectual property for companies to own and exploit Indigenous resources and banning communities from teaching traditional knowledge and customs of caring for their land and resources to the next generations. She also dedicated much of her degree to exploring why Canada is resistant to decriminalising sex work given that Indigenous women are overrepresented in the industry and how this is a modern-day manifestation of settler colonialism.
