An 8-year-old girl who was being held captive in bonded labor was finally rescued after she managed to escape and contact a relative.

The girl had been trafficked to Delhi a few years ago and forced to perform domestic work as well as babysit a 4-year-old child. If she failed to perform her chores she was beaten by her employer.

Take Action: Help stop domestic slavery in Delhi.

The Times of India reports:

Nirmal Gorana from the National Campaign Committee for Eradication of Bonded Labour said that that girl…was forced to work as a domestic worker in Shaheen Bagh. The girl told the counsellors that her mother was lured by the employer with a promise that she would be looked after by them like their own child and would also be sent to school.

However, after a few days, the employer began forcing her to do all the household chores and used to verbally and physically assault her.

“Whenever she felt I was not doing a good job, I was forcefully confined to the house and was only allowed to visit my parents on holidays for a few hours,” she said in her complaint.

She added that the employers accompanied her when she visited her parents and she was not allowed to tell them about the physical and mental trauma she was enduring.

Finally, a few months ago after being beaten by her employer the girl managed to escape, fleeing to her sister’s house to report the abuse. Her sister than notified their parents, who were unaware of their daughter’s exploitation.

The girl has now been sent to counselling and will be sent to her parents soon. It has also been announced that she will receive Rs 20,000 for her rehabilitation.
