Many call it “modern day slavery,” and Tennessee is starting to see that it is happening in their own state. FBI Knoxville Agent Cynthia Deitle: “In sex trafficking, specifically, traffickers – or pimps – target young girls. Traffickers know where to find the victims, and they know a lot of young kids are on these social media sites.”
Gina Fiorilla Cavallo, a survivor of human trafficking, was arrested for crimes she was forced to commit while being exploited. Long after escaping trafficking, those charges remained on her record—limiting her access to stable work and housing and shaping how others perceived her.
