Field report: End Child Marriage in Jordan

Goal:

To call on the world’s richest nations to help fund the fight to end child marriage in Jordan.

Summary:

Forced child marriage among the Syrian refugee population in Jordan sharply increased, as more and more families see child marriage as a way to protect girls from sexual violence and lessen their financial burden. Humanitarian agencies work hard to stem the tide of child marriages with education and protection programmes, but are heavily underfunded. Some of the world’s richest nations like Australia, the US and New Zealand were not contributing to their fair share of aid, prompting Freedom United to launch an action.

Outcome:

Freedom United handed in over 105,000 signatures to the Australian government and the Australian embassy in Jordan.  Our supporters took part in the hand-ins in April 2015, prior to that they also blogged about the action, wrote letters and raised awareness of the issue.
