Modern Slavery Facts
Getting educated is the first step to making a difference against modern slavery. Here are some facts to get you started.
- An estimated 40 million people are in modern slavery worldwide.
- Forced labor generates an estimated $150 billion each year, making it the 2nd largest international crime.
- Worldwide it is estimated that one in four victims are children.
- Human trafficking is the act of recruiting or transferring a person by means of coercion, abduction or deception for the purpose of exploitation.
- While most people assume trafficking for sexual exploitation to be the larger problem, labor trafficking is much more common.
- Over 8,700 cases of human trafficking were reported to the US National Hotline in 2017.
