Worldwide around 25 million people are estimated to be in forced labour, being made to work against their will under threat of punishment. The products they make can end up in the European market, making European citizens unwillingly consumers of and contributors to this exploitation. This has to stop! The EU must make sure that we stop fuelling the demand for forced labour. Products tainted with forced labour do not have any place on our shelves. This week the European Parliament will take a stance and vote to have a new trade instrument to ban products made by forced labour. On June 9th the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for a new instrument to ban products made with forced labour, a little less than a year after President Ursula von der Leyen committed herself to such a ban. It is now high time for us to not just talk the talk but walk the walk.
