Congress Seeks More Transparency in Human Trafficking

The Senate committee may draft legislation that encourages more transparency to the State Department’s report on human trafficking that is released each year.

Republican chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations panel, Senator Bob Corker, said lawmakers are questioning the credibility of the report, wondering if politics is clouding human rights issues regarding rankings of countries like Malaysia and Cuba.  Democrat Senator Ben Cardin and Corker, both expressed concerns.  Corker said: “I think what you are going to see happen is likely a legislative push to create some transparency around countries being upgraded so we understand what the dynamic is.”
