- What is Freedom United?
Freedom United is a recognized nonprofit organization in the U.S., educating and empowering our community on the realities of modern slavery and mobilizing to create systemic change. Our vision is a world free of modern slavery and human trafficking.
Freedom United’s platform enables the public to understand their connection to modern slavery and what it looks like. Together, our power shifts policies and social values for good, holding businesses, society, and government accountable to tackle modern slavery at its root — as part of a prevention strategy.
We are proud to work with people and organizations around the world. Working in collaboration means we benefit from their expertise and they benefit from the power of our community. Wherever possible, Freedom United builds coalitions of organizations so that our message is coordinated and our impact maximized. In this way, we have the influence necessary to challenge the systems that allow slavery to thrive.
- How does Freedom United work?
We are a movement of over 8 million people everywhere, fighting to end one of the world’s greatest evils – modern slavery. As a movement, we work towards this goal by building broad public support for legislative, corporate, and social policy change and enforcement.
For a more detailed explanation of what we do, please visit our website’s “About Us” page here.
- How was Freedom United started?
Freedom United is the new name for the anti-slavery organization formerly known as WalkFree.org. Audacity Factory, a USA-based collaborative, took over leadership of the organization from the Australia-based Minderoo Foundation in 2016. After listening to our community of 8 million supporters, we realized a new brand and website was needed to expand our efforts and take our mission to the next level.
Modern slavery may go by many names, but that doesn’t change what it is. In the same way, we may be using a different name, but our mission to end slavery with a united movement or partners and supporters remains the same.
- Can I interview someone from Freedom United?
If you are a member of the media and would like to request an interview with one of our team members, please contact us at [email protected].
For student requests, we thank you for your interest in Freedom United. Unfortunately, due to the large number of requests we receive from students, we are unable to provide interviews. Best wishes with your studies.

WHAT INFORMATION DO WE COLLECT?
Personal information is data that can be used to identify or contact a single person. We generally collect or receive personal information in three ways:
- when you voluntarily provide information to us, such as when you register an account with or input information into our website, donate to us (online or offline), sign a petition, contact us, or attend one of our events;
- we collect information automatically, such as through cookies or through use of our website; and
- other parties, such as social networks, may provide information to us or grant us access to information which can be reasonably linked to you.
Each of these methods is described in more detail below:
- Information You Voluntarily Choose to Provide
The personal information we collect from you will vary depending on the services you are using, the websites you are visiting, and how you access those services and websites. The personal information you provide to us may include the following: first and last name, street address, city, state, zip code, country, email address, and any other information you submit to us through email, online forms on the websites or offline.
- Information Collected Automatically When You Use the Website
Like most websites, we collect basic web traffic information (such as IP addresses) to monitor overall usage of our site. This helps us understand traffic patterns and know if there are problems on the site. We use embedded images in emails to track open rates for our campaigns, so that we can better learn how to keep members of our community engaged with the fight against modern slavery. We also use URLs (website links) in emails with an identifier that allows us to correctly identify the person who takes an action using a web page, so we can know who our most active members are and what initiatives they support.
We also collect information about you through the use of cookies. Cookie technology is used on several parts of our Websites. Please see the ‘How do we use cookies?’ policy to learn more about our use of cookies and information we collect through them.
We use Google Analytics to collect certain analytical information, as described below, to help us better understand activity on the Websites, and improve the quality of the Websites. We receive this data in an aggregated, anonymous form that does not personally identify any individual user.
- Information We Receive from Others
In some cases, other parties provide us with personal information about you, or allow us to collect personal information about you. In some cases, we are not able to control the amount or type of information that other parties like social networks, make available to us. Although we cannot control your privacy settings at those websites or how those other parties protect your privacy, once we receive information about you through those websites, we will treat it in accordance with this Privacy Policy.
HOW DO WE USE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION?
We use your personal information:
- to provide the services or information you request;
- to identify and authenticate users for signing up for and logging in to the Websites;
- to populate our petition ‘hand-ins’ (submitting signatories’ first name, last initial and countries to the recipients/targets of our petitions);
- to stay in contact with you, let you know of new opportunities to take part in the fight against modern slavery, and provide you with updates and information;
- to better understand our users, their interests, and their preferences, in order to provide more targeted communications;
- to develop, deliver, and improve our services, user experience and other offerings;
- to measure the effectiveness of our content and campaigns;
- to monitor performance of the Websites;
- to monitor and moderate online community interactions on the Websites (for example, public comments and community inquiries);
- to authorize and process transactions for donations;
- to track donation histories and peer-to-peer fundraising activity to improve relationship management with our donors; and
- for internal auditing purposes.
We also collect information in an aggregated form that does not, on its own, permit direct association with any specific individual. We may collect, use, transfer, and disclose aggregated or otherwise non-personal information for any purpose.
Use of Google Analytics, Adwords and Remarketing
The Websites may use Google Analytics and similar web analytics services. Google Analytics is used to track unregistered users on the Websites, to record multiple visits by unregistered users to the Websites, and to record all the pages that unregistered users visit at the Websites. If and when an unregistered user registers with the Websites, all of his or her previous visits and activity on the Websites will be associated with his or her registered user profile. Google Analytics tracks registered users’ visits to the Websites whenever they return.
The Websites will not (and will not allow any third party to) use Google Analytics to track, collect, or upload any data that personally identifies an individual (such as a name, address, or billing information), or other data that can reasonably be linked to such information by Google.
The Websites may use all features of Google Analytics for display advertisers including obtaining specific visitor cookie data, such as the source, medium, and keyword used to visit the Websites. Google Analytics does not store any visitor-specific data, and the Websites will not use specific data regarding users in any way related to Google Analytics, Google Adwords, and Remarketing.
The Websites may use remarketing with Google Adwords and analytics to display content-specific advertisements to users who previously visited the Websites when those users go to other websites that have Google Display Network implemented.
The Websites and other third-party vendors, including Google, use first-party cookies (such as the Google Analytics cookie) and third-party cookies (such as the DoubleClick cookie) together to inform, optimize, and serve ads based on users’ past visits to the Websites.
The Websites will not facilitate the merging of personally identifiable information with non-personally identifiable information that is collected through any Google advertising product or feature unless you specifically and affirmatively provide us with your consent to that merger of personally identifiable and non-personally identifiable information.
You can opt-out of Google Analytics for Display Advertising and customize Google Display Network ads using Google’s Ads Settings.
You can also opt-out of Google Analytics for Display Advertising, to prevent your data from being used by Google Analytics, by going to the Google Analytics opt-out page. You can obtain additional information on Google Analytics’ collection and processing of data, including how to opt out, here.

https://www.freedomunited.org/our-team/ - How can I get involved?
Thank you for interest in getting involved with Freedom United. The support of community members like you is what powers the work we do.
An easy way to get involved is by signing petitions for the campaigns that mean the most to you and sharing with friends, family, and colleagues so they can do the same. Your support helps us tackle the causes of modern slavery and create a society where everyone is free.
Another way people support us is by donating to campaigns. We would use 100% of your donations to expose and end human trafficking and modern slavery. Our organization operates independently, free from the influence of governments, corporations, or other interests which is why our generous donors choose to support Freedom United.
For more information, please feel free to contact us at [email protected] with any other questions. Your support is always appreciated.
- I want to learn more about modern slaveryPlease visit our Learn page, which hosts links to various videos, webinars, and our Freedom Map—a visual guide to modern slavery’s prevalence worldwide, powered by the Global Slavery Index.
Additionally, you can subscribe to our weekly campaign and news digest emails here.
If you have any questions about our resources, please do not hesitate to contact us here.
- Is your campaigning making a difference?
The impact of years of effective, informed and sophisticated campaigning has been impressive. Our approach to sustainable freedom, securing change towards a world in which slavery no longer thrives, means preventing slavery for years and generations to come.
You can view our successes here. - What is the definition of modern slavery?
Many people think slavery ended over a hundred years ago, but slavery still exists – trapping tens of millions of people throughout the world, despite the practice being illegal everywhere. Someone trapped in modern slavery lives in fear, suffers constant exploitation, and has no way of escape. For a detailed description of modern slavery, please visit our Learn section.
- I can't believe slavery exists in my country.
We know it’s shocking that slavery still exists. You can find out more information about modern slavery in your country or region in the Global Slavery Index. Other good resources include the US State Department TIP (Trafficking in Persons) report, and the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Global Report on Trafficking in Persons.
- I or someone I know may be a victim of slavery.
We are very sorry to hear about this difficult situation. Freedom United does not provide direct services to victims of modern slavery. If you believe that you or someone you know may be a victim, we advise you to contact a local organization which can help.
USA: Call the Human Trafficking Hotline at +1 888-373-7888 or contact them here.
Mexico: Call the National Helpline Against Trafficking in Persons at 01 800 5533 000.
UK: Call the Modern Slavery Helpline at 08000 121 700 or make a report online.
If you are not in one of the countries listed above, please see the Global Modern Slavery Directory to find anti-slavery organizations closest to you.
- How can I ensure my purchases are slavery-free?
Unfortunately, no comprehensive guides on modern slavery and products exist yet. Several organizations are currently working on something similar to the Fair Trade certification to ensure products are slavery-free. However, you could check out this guide by Ethical Consumer to start.
- How does the decriminalization of sex work combat human trafficking?
As an organization committed to human rights, we firmly believe that the decriminalization of sex work could play a significant role in combating sexual exploitation including human trafficking. This perspective is elaborated on our website, where we discuss our views on the topic.
Covered in this Q&A piece on our website, there is evidence that the criminalization of sex work exposes individuals involved to various forms of abuse and exploitation, often at the hands of law enforcement. Moreover, it renders them more susceptible to violence, including rape, assault, and even murder, as they are perceived as easy targets due to societal stigma. Additionally, the current legal framework hinders sex workers from seeking justice for crimes perpetrated against them, such as human trafficking.
Decriminalization presents an opportunity to create a safer environment, allowing victims of trafficking to come forward without fear of prosecution. It also enables law enforcement to focus their efforts on apprehending perpetrators of human trafficking rather than targeting sex workers and their clients.
We encourage you to explore further insights via our website. Your support is invaluable to us, and we sincerely hope you’ll take the time to consider our perspective.

- Can you provide the URL of the last page you were on before the error?
- Are you on a Mac, PC, mobile device or tablet?
- Can you attach a screenshot of the page that delivers the error?
Once we receive your email, we’ll contact you with a resolution.
- My card keeps getting rejected
We use a secure payment processor to ensure that your credit card information is safe. However, sometimes it may reject payments for unspecified reasons. We recommend contacting your issuing bank to understand why the charge was blocked.
If you need to contact us about a donation, please email us at [email protected] or call us at +1 984-500-3725.
- Secure site is not available
Our site runs on https, and we can assure them that our site is fully secure and all certificates are up to date. Anyone who types http without the ‘s’ will be redirected to ‘https’ as we do not host any content on http.
It is, therefore, possible that your browser or security settings block redirects, which is causing this alert. I suggest you try typing out https://www.freedomunited.org, which should go straight through. It may also help to clear your browser cache.
- I did not receive your email to target instructions
We understand that our design is not as simple or straightforward as it could be, but we designed it this way so that the emails to the targets come from the supporters’ own accounts – that way, they’re taken more seriously and not easily blocked. However, the email that goes to you may land in your junk folder unfortunately if you’ve not listed Freedom United as a safe sender.
To make sure that any following email to target action can be completed, please signal to your email provider that you trust emails coming from our accounts.
- Email to target action does not work
We’re sorry that a button on our website is not working.
If you have time, please try the following:
- Clear your browser’s cache and cookies.
- Try another browser to see if that works.
- Double-check your internet connection.
- Confirm you have the right permissions to use the feature.
If it still plays hard to get, don’t worry! Sometimes tech has its quirks. Feel free to copy-paste your message and target email addresses from the auto-reply.
Your support means the world to us! Email to target actions are especially helpful as they take more than one click to happen but seem the most effective method for getting peoples’ attention! Thank you for taking action – and for your patience!
If you have more details or funny error messages, send them to [email protected]. We’re on a mission to make things smooth for you.

- What does my donation do?
We’re always committed to using your donated funds in the most effective way to fight modern day slavery. This means investing in more than just materials. Here are some things needed to complete a successful fight against modern slavery:
Personnel costs
People make our campaigns run, so our costs include salaries and benefits for advocacy officers and campaigners, as well as technical experts like lawyers and accountants.Travel costs
Sometimes, raising awareness and resources for the fight against modern slavery means talking to people in person. Our expert team members have been called on to advise multinational corporations and intergovernmental organizations as to what they can be doing to eliminate modern slavery, so we include costs for travel to carry that message of freedom forward.Percentage of donation to mission
Over 90% is spent directly on our mission. For example, in 2022, when we spent a bit more on fundraising, the exact figure was 91%. In 2021 it was 94%. We are able to keep such a high proportion spent on our mission because we don’t pay any rent on offices, benefit from substantial in-kind donations, and are careful to keep our operational costs down.
- How can I donate from outside the U.S.
We love our international supporters! However, please be aware that only donations made from within the U.S. are tax-deductible.
For international donations by check, we accept bank issued money orders in USD. Money orders should be made payable to Freedom United and can be mailed to: 7320 Abron Drive, Durham NC 27713, USA.
