Tougher Charges for Human Trafficking in L.A. County

Law enforcement has for a long time recognized little difference between prostitutes and pimps.  That attitude is changing very quickly in LA…

Prosecutors there have started going harder after pimps charged with human trafficking giving them significantly greater sentences. The district attorney’s office in 2014 charged 81 people with human trafficking; but in 2013 there were only 25 charged. Things began to change when Proposition 35 was passed in 2012.  It strengthened the law and made sentences stiffer and those criminals easier to prosecute.  More often now, women and children are treated as victims rather than criminals.  Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell said,  “The crime is still against the law, but obviously we do everything we can to treat them as victims.”

Group selling babies for $13,000 convicted in Indonesia

An Indonesian court has convicted 19 people for their roles in a trafficking network that sold babies to buyers in Singapore. The group recruited pregnant women, arranged false documents and transported infants overseas under the guise of adoption.
