Addressing the Risks of Exploitation for Displaced Ukrainians in the UK

“On the 18th March the Government’s Home for Ukraine Scheme opened for visa applications. Under the scheme displaced Ukrainian nationals who have a named sponsor are able to seek refuge in the UK. The Anti-Trafficking sector are concerned about the exploitation and trafficking risks that the scheme presents.

This forum will explore issues around unaccompanied children arriving in the UK, possible gaps in checks and safeguarding responses for vulnerable adults and children and the potential for traffickers to capitalise on the opportunities that the scheme presents, particularly around self-matching on social media. We will also consider the risks experienced by Ukrainian people in the UK who are ineligible for the scheme, namely those under the Seasonal Worker Visa.

Discussion will also focus on the ways in which the possible risks can be mitigated, and how Ukrainian refugees arriving in the UK can be empowered with knowledge of their rights and entitlements to tackle the potential for exploitation.”
