Honoring Abolitionist Matilda Joslyn Gage

Each month Human Rights First profiles a brave man or woman–either contemporary or historical, who has worked to end slavery.

Born in Fayetteville, NY, in 1826, Matilda Joslyn Gage’s home became an Underground Railroad Station for slaves trying to escape to freedom. Cage signed a statement promising to assist any slave coming from the South.  She was outspoken and constantly under watch, but it didn’t silence her. She spoke out and wrote about the cause.  She was also an advocate for women’s suffrage.
