I am calling for on all foreign actors—public and private—that have operations or investments in Eritrea to divest immediately, and to publicly declare their opposition to the government’s practice of forced conscription.

Complicity in the Eritrean government’s National Service, which involves the forced conscription of hundreds of thousands of Eritreans, is inevitable for those doing business or investing in the country.

I ask businesses and institutions investing in Eritrea to use their power to call on the government to eradicate forced conscription and forced labor so that it becomes a country in which to do good business.

To ensure the immediate wellbeing of workers, I additionally call on parties to take remedial action to compensate workers, as much as is possible, upon divesting.  Â
