WE ARE A MODERN ABOLITIONIST MOVEMENT

In every country around the world, people are exploited against their willcontrolled by threats, debt, and violence. We call it by many names, but it amounts to the same thing: modern slavery. Slavery is illegal everywhere, but it continues to thrive because so many of us:
Don’t understand it • Don’t want to think about it • Don’t know how to change it
That’s where we come in. By joining Freedom United, you become part of the solution. We’ve proven time and time again: the collective voice can make a difference. So get started – and welcome to the movement!

Global Vision International and African Impact first to take a stand against orphanage trafficking

September 2018
Global Vision International and African Impact are the first to take a stand against orphanage trafficking by publicly committing to stop offering volunteer placements in orphanages, recognizing the risks of trafficking associated with children in institutions. They are leading the way for other volunteer tour operators to play their part in disrupting the cycle of exploitation that traffickers seek to perpetuate and profit from.

Qatar adopts new law removing migrant workers' need for exit visas

September 2018
The Qatar government has adopted a new law removing the need for the majority of migrant workers to obtain exit visas. Migrant workers covered by the Labor Code in Qatar will no longer require permission from their employer to obtain an exit visa to leave the country. This new law represents positive change for many thousands of migrant workers, however, they will still need their employers' permission to change jobs. Disappointingly, this law does not protect all migrant workers in Qatar. We are nonetheless greatly encouraged by this positive change and will continue our campaign to see all migrant workers fully protected under Qatari law.

Moussa Biram and Abdellahi Matallah Saleck released from detention

July 2018
On July 12, 2018, Mr. Moussa Biram and Mr. Abdellahi Matalla Saleck were finally released from detention. This followed mounting international pressure from the United Nations, the African Union, Mauritanian activists and supporters from around the world calling for an end to slavery in Mauritania and the freedom for anti-slavery activists to continue their work in peace. In January 2018, our partner Freedom Now submitted a petition to a UN Working Group who concluded that Moussa and Abdellahi’s detention was arbitrary, in violation of international law and that they must be released immediately. We are overjoyed that Moussa and Abdellahi are finally free and we hope to see lasting change in Mauritania that will enable anti-slavery activists to work to end slavery without fear of reprisal.

Commonwealth Heads of Government commit to ending modern slavery

April 2018
Success! In April 2018, the Commonwealth Heads of Government heard our call and finally committed to taking effective measures to end modern slavery and human trafficking. The Commonwealth’s Communiqué released at the end of the meeting said: “Heads called for effective measures to eradicate forced labour, end modern slavery and human trafficking, and secure the prohibition and elimination of the worst forms of child labour in all its forms by 2025” mirroring our call set out in our petition. We are delighted by the commitment expressed in the Communiqué and with their call to action, the potential for creating a world in which slavery no longer thrives is enormous.
