SUMMARY:Holding Companies to Account
DESCRIPTION:On March 4th Global Witness\, in partnership with Anti-Slavery International and the Clean Clothes Campaign\, will host an online conversation between European Union representatives and advocates from Colombia and India who are campaigning for justice for the serious harms inflicted on workers and communities by unscrupulous companies. \nCorporations enjoy unprecedented wealth and power. For years\, many have abused that power at immense human and environmental cost. Our legal systems are pitifully inadequate to stop this – governments and citizens have no real legal means to hold companies accountable for the harms they cause. \nTogether we will discuss what’s needed to introduce strong and enforceable laws. \nDate: 4th March 2021 \nTime: 10:30 Bogota/ 15:30 London / 16:30 Brussels / 21:00 Delhi \nLive interpretation will be available in Spanish\, Portuguese and French. \nYou can register here: https://act.globalwitness.org/page/75992/subscribe/1

SUMMARY:Are we on the right track to enact an effective law to eradicate human trafficking?
DESCRIPTION:Korea has completely failed to respond to human trafficking. Perpetrators have not been punished\, meanwhile the victims were neglected and unprotected.Would it be possible for the perpetrators to be brought to justice and for the victims to be effectively protected with the new special law on human trafficking introduced at the end of 2020 by MP Sujin Lee?

SUMMARY:Fanm Rebèl: Excavating the Histories of Haiti's Women Revolutionaries
DESCRIPTION:The Haitian Revolution of 1791-1804 was the most radical antislavery and anticolonial struggle of the modern Atlantic World\, and the only successful slave revolution. Yet the dominant\, white-authored colonial archive conspicuously occludes the insurgent experiences of women. Even the histories that emerged out of Haiti in the wake of independence gave partial and fragmented insights into the lives of the women at the forefront of the struggle. \nIn this seminar\, Nicole Willson will talk about the challenges and scholarly imperative of resurrecting Haiti’s women revolutionaries from archival silence. She will talk about some of the important discoveries that she has made in attempting to excavate these narratives\, shedding light on the stories of women that have been too often consigned to the margins\, and looking at examples of recovery in the archives of imagination and creativity across the Black Atlantic. \nSpeaker: \nNicole Willson is a Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellow at the University of Central Lancashire’s Institute for Black Atlantic Research (IBAR). After completing her PhD at the University of East Anglia in 2016\, Nicole worked at the Universities of Greenwich and Kent and\, from 2018-2019\, served as the Postdoctoral Research Associate on Celeste-Marie Bernier’s AHRC-funded project Our Bondage and Our Freedom: Frederick Douglass and Family (1818-2018) at the University of Edinburgh. She sits on the editorial board for the British Association of American Studies and has published in the Journal of American Studies\, Kalfou: A Journal of Comparative and Relational Ethnic Studies\, Slavery & Abolition and Women’s Studies International Forum. In 2019\, she appeared on Dan Snow’s History Hit podcast and\, in January 2021\, she released a documentary filmed in association with the Haitian Chamber of Commerce on the British exile journey of Marie-Louise Christophe\, first and last Queen of Haiti. \nYou can register here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/fanm-rebel-excavating-the-histories-of-haitis-women-revolutionaries-registration-138961869693?aff=ebdssbonlinesearch

SUMMARY:Forced Marriage in the U.S.: A Screening of Knots and Discussion With Its Stars
DESCRIPTION:As the United Nations launches the (virtual) 65th session of the Commission on the Status of Women — the world’s largest annual gathering on women’s rights — we are launching a parallel event. \nForced and child marriage are human rights abuses that remain legal in most of the United States\, impacting mostly women and girls. These abuses often mean a lifetime of rape\, abuse and domestic servitude\, and the loss of reproductive and financial rights. \nLet’s hear directly from three U.S. forced marriage survivors whose stories are chronicled in the award-winning\, feature-length-length documentary film Knots. We’ll watch the film together\, then Mabel van Oranje of Girls Not Brides will moderate a discussion with the three survivors and the film producer how eradicating forced and child marriage is necessary to achieve gender equality. \nYou can register here: https://www.unchainedatlast.org/knots-at-csw65/

SUMMARY:Book club LIVE: Kenway and Pang unpack slavery's role in the political economy
DESCRIPTION:Bookworms\, Freedom United has a special event for you! We are hosting a discussion with two brilliant and brand new authors and invite you to join in the conversation. \nEmily Kenway\, whose critically acclaimed book titled ‘The Truth About Modern Slavery’\, reveals how modern slavery has been created as a political tool by those in power. It shows how anti-slavery action acts as a moral cloak\, hiding the harms of the ‘hostile environment’ towards migrants\, legitimising big brands’ exploitation of the poorest workers and oppressing sex workers\, providing a vital challenge to conventional narratives on modern slavery. \nAmelia Pang whose incredibly timely book ‘Made in China: A Prisoner\, an SOS Letter\, and the Hidden Cost of America’s Cheap Goods’\, explores the experience working in a forced labor camp through Sun Yi\, a Falun Gong practitioner\, producing goods that end up on the shelves of U.S. shops. \nThe discussion will be moderated by Baroness Lola Young OBE\, herself a woman of letters with an honorary doctorate from the University of Nottingham\, a published author and a former chair of the judging panel for the Booker Prize. Baroness Young of Hornsey has also made important contributions to the fight against modern slavery in the UK parliamentary upper house where she sits\, notably introducing the offence of forced labor to the UK’s statute books in 2009. \nJoanna Ewart-James\, Freedom United’s Executive Director\, will also be joining the conversation and you can too\, as the speakers will be ready to answer questions from the Freedom United community. \nWeds March 24th 12pm ET\, 4pm GMT\, 5pm CET
