SUMMARY:Qatar\, kafala & the World Cup
DESCRIPTION:As the 2022 Qatar World Cup draws nearer\, systematic labor rights abuses in Qatar are under the spotlight. \nTune in to a special event with migrant workers’ rights activist and blogger Malcolm Bidali and human rights and migrant workers’ rights expert Nicholas McGeehan as we explore what still needs to change to ensure migrant workers are better protected from modern slavery. \nWe’ll be exploring questions such as: \n\nHave reforms to the kafala system gone far enough?\nAre legal reforms sufficient to improve conditions for workers?\nHow does the kafala system continue to impact workers in the country?\nWhat still needs to change before the World Cup to ensure migrant workers are protected from forced labor and exploitation?\n\nThis is a perfect opportunity to ask our expert speakers about what is happening in Qatar and what we can do to keep holding the Qatar government\, and FIFA\, accountable.

SUMMARY:HTF Online Forum: Rwanda Offshoring Proposal & Modern Slavery
DESCRIPTION:“On Thursday 14th April\, the Government announced a new asylum arrangement that seeks to offshore individuals seeking asylum in the UK to Rwanda. \nThis proposal will see asylum seekers travelling to the UK illegally considered for relocation in Rwanda where their claims will be processed without the option of returning to the UK once decisions have been made. Survivors of modern slavery will also be eligible for the scheme\, with Rwanda responsible for providing their support. \nJoin us to explore the possible risks for survivors of trafficking with ATLEU and the British Red Cross to discuss the concerns the Anti-Trafficking sector has with the Home Office’s offshoring proposal.”

SUMMARY:Sex Work Laws in Canada: Toward a Rights-Based Law Reform
DESCRIPTION:“This panel will discuss the impact of Canada’s sex work laws on sex workers and gender equality. Currently\, Canada’s sex work laws criminalize many aspects of the sex industry\, including the sale of sexual services and third party involvement (i.e.\, materially benefitting from someone doing sex work). \nThe panelists will discuss the impact of Canada’s sex work laws on sex workers’ safety and human rights\, and why law reform centered on evidence and human rights is needed. Panelists will also discuss how sex workers have long been advocating for their rights\, and how civil society and gender equality organizations like LEAF can provide solidarity and support to sex workers’ movements.” \nPanelists: \n\nElene Lam • Butterfly (Asian and Migrant Sex Workers Support Network)\nJenn Clamen • Canadian Alliance for Sex Work Law Reform\nMonica Forrester • Maggie’s Toronto Sex Workers Action Project\nPam Hrick • Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF)\n\nModerated by Rosel Kim (LEAF)
