SUMMARY:International Human Trafficking & Social Justice Conference
DESCRIPTION:Since 2004\, The International Human Trafficking and Social Justice Conference has been bringing together researchers\, practitioners\, and individuals with lived experience in an effort to lay the groundwork for future collaborative research\, advocacy\, and program development. \nTo date\, the trafficking conference has welcomed thousands of attendees from 50 states and 40 countries to learn from researchers\, survivors\, and social service\, health care\, and criminal justice professionals about human trafficking and social justice topics. \nRecently\, there have been many new and exciting opportunities for expansion regarding the conference\, which includes a name change because of a larger mission. In 2015\, the conference title was changed to the International Human Trafficking & Social Justice Conference. The concept of social justice will expand topics at the conference to include many of the injustices seen in the world today. \nWe greatly appreciate those who have brought the conference this far. Change is hard\, but is also necessary. All are welcome to join us in sharing knowledge and diverse perspectives at the conference. Our conference has a maximum of 12 continuing education credits for social work\, counseling\, marriage & family therapy\, chemical dependency\, nursing\, health education\, public health\, occupational therapy\, DODD\, and law.

SUMMARY:FAIR SHARE TO END CHILD LABOUR: Survivors and Leaders on Social Protection
DESCRIPTION:Join Nobel Laureates\, world leaders\, & child labour survivors to demand urgent solutions to end child labour & child poverty. \nAbout this event\nThis event is hosted by Laureates and Leaders for Children and co-sponsored by the Government of Sweden\, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs\, and the International Labour Organization. \nSPEAKERS INCLUDE: \nHE Stefan Löfven\, Prime Minister of Sweden\nMr. Guy Ryder\, Director-General\, International Labour Organization\nHE Dag-Inge Ulstein\, Minister for International Development\, Norway\nHE José Ramos-Horta\, 1996 Nobel Peace Laureate and President of Timor-Leste (2007-2012)\nMr. Kailash Satyarthi\, 2014 Nobel Peace Laureate\nMs. Sharan Burrow\, General Secretary\, International Trade Union Confederation\nMr. Manan Ansari\, Child labour survivor-advocate\, India\nMr. Martin Chungong\, Secretary General\, Inter-Parliamentary Union\nMs. Kerry Kennedy\, President\, RFK Human Rights\nMs. Carmen Romero\, Global Student Forum\nMs. Lorena Castillo Garcia\, Global Spokesperson for Zero Discrimination (UNAIDS)\, Ambassador for Peace of UN Women for Peace\nMr. Tim Ryan\, Chairperson\, Global March Against Child Labour\nEven before the pandemic\, the number of children trapped in child labour increased for the first time in two decades. Shockingly\, the biggest increase came amongst children aged 5-11 years old. The total number of child labourers had grown to 160 million by the start of 2020\, and the worst-case scenario predictions show this could rise to over 206 million by the end of 2022 as a result of the pandemic. The pandemic has already forced an additional 150 million children into multidimensional poverty – bringing the total number of children living with this injustice to 1.2 billion. \nThis is a child rights catastrophe\, but it can be reversed through strong social protection systems to provide a resilient foundation for our children. \nThe world has a responsibility to the millions of children being forced into poverty and child labour every week: will the international community take this unprecedented opportunity to end this? \nJoin survivors of child labour\, heads of government\, Nobel Laureates\, international leaders and youth activists from around the world to demand urgent action for the world’s most marginalised children.

SUMMARY:Liberated Africans and the Study of Slavery: New Directions
DESCRIPTION:Shantel George\, University of Glasgow\nJake Subryan Richards\, London School of Economics and Political Science\nMaeve Ryan\, King’s College London\nRichard Anderson\, Aberdeen University\nChair: Christine Whyte\, University of Glasgow\n\nFrom 1807 until the end of the 19th century\, Africans ‘liberated’ from illegal slaving vessels were re-settled in West Africa\, the Cape Colony\, Kenya\, across the Caribbean and in South America. These tens of thousands of men\, women and children endured enslavement\, some survived the experience of liberation\, but many did not. This roundtable brings together scholars working across Africa and the Atlantic tracing the lives and legacies of Liberated Africans. How do these new studies of abolition\, liberation and survival change our understanding of slavery and its legacies? What is the role of scholars of slavery and abolition in public history? Why has ‘abolition’ be co-opted so often as a top-down ‘good’ gifted by the British Empire? How do social and political histories of Liberated Africans correct these notions?
