SUMMARY:Thai El Monte Garment Workers: The Return of Slavery and Trafficking in The Modern Era
DESCRIPTION:At 4 am on August 2\, 1995\, Chanchanit Martorell\, Executive Director of the Thai Community Development Center\, met with government authorities and law enforcement at a doughnut shop in El Monte\, California\, blocks from the slavery compound that they would raid\, a row of apartment duplexes on a residential street\, eerily surrounded by barbed wire. The US Department of Labor\, California Labor Commission\, California Employment Development Department\, Cal-OSHA\, federal marshals\, and the El Monte police participated in the raid. \nThai CDC mobilized a coalition of nonprofit organizations\, attorneys\, and community members to offer shelter\, food and clothing\, medical care\, jobs\, and legal services to the workers following their liberation.\n\nThe Thai workers had labored for 18 or more hours every day inside rat-infested buildings where they lived crammed into bedrooms with ten of their fellow slaves. Their captors controlled them by confiscating passports\, hiring armed guards\, and physically threatening them and their families back home. \nThey made clothes for brand-name manufacturers and nationwide retailers. Garments bore the labels Anchor Blue\, Tomato\, Clio\, B.U.M.\, High Sierra\, Axle\, and others—labels owned by well-known retailers\, such as Miller’s Outpost and Montgomery Ward\, or sold on the racks of Nordstrom\, Sears\, and Target. \nEl Monte was the first recognized case of modern-day slavery in the United States\, leading to the passage of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act in the year 2000. This exhibition tells the story of the case from the perspective of the survivors\, featuring their testimonies\, images and maps of the compound\, and other artifacts. \n(June 10- September 5 2021)

SUMMARY:Panel Discussion: Practical steps to identify\, mitigate and remediate Modern Slavery Risk
DESCRIPTION:In an increasingly globalised world with complex supply chain\, combined with a lack of transparency\, modern slavery has been a major challenge for businesses in Australia\, the UK and around the world. All of us share a responsibility to tackle this issue. \nThe good news is that governments around the world are stepping up to root out the issue and hold companies to account. There were several significant developments in 2020: The UK announced reforms to its landmark Modern Slavery Act\, while countries including Switzerland\, Germany\, Norway and Finland proposed new human rights reforms. \nThe Australian Modern Slavery Act (the Act) was passed on 29 November 2018 and the reporting requirements came into force as of 1 January 2019. \nThe Act requires companies (with annual revenue exceeding AUD 100 million) to define what they are doing to prevent slavery in their supply chains and operations\, and actions to address those risks. \nMany businesses in Australia and beyond have already submitted their first Modern Slavery Statements. \nGet first-hand insights on:\n– The practical steps you should take to understand the impact of modern slavery risk within your supply chain.\n– What to do when risk is identified and how to mitigate or remediate it.\n– Signs to watch out for\, especially if you have a small risk and compliance team in place.\n– How to get organisational buy-in and create sustainable change.\n– How to measure the effectiveness of your modern slavery program. \nOur expert panel includes:\n– Abigail McGregor\, Partner\, Norton Rose Fulbright Australia\n– Elaina Smouha\, Lead Counsel & Deputy Company Secretary\, Arrow Energy\n– Shehan Micheal\, Procurement Manager\, Anglicare \nModerator:\nMartin Money\, Managing Director\, APAC\, ethiXbase

SUMMARY:United States' Child Marriage Problem
DESCRIPTION:The United States has a child marriage problem\, our new study proves. \nJoin us at Unchained At Last and Chelsea Clinton on June 17 for a virtual discussion of the groundbreaking study\, which found nearly 300\,000 children were legally married in the U.S. between 2000 and 2018 — mostly girls wed to adult men\, typically before the girls were old enough to file for divorce or enter a domestic violence shelter. Some 60\,000 marriages occurred at an age or with a spousal age difference that should have been considered a sex crime. \nWe’ll mark our 10th anniversary by talking with bipartisan legislators\, advocates and a survivor about the grave implications of child marriage for girls\, women and society — and about the simple solution that is available. \nModerator \n\nChelsea Clinton\, Vice Chair of the Clinton Foundation\n\nSpeakers \n\nNew York Sen. Julia Salazar\nSouth Carolina Sen. Katrina Shealy\nDr. Yvette Efevbera\, Advisor\, Gender-Based Violence and Child Marriage\, Gender Equality at Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation\nBlair Imani\, Author\, Educator\, and Influencer\nPatricia Abatemarco\, Child Marriage Survivor and Mental Health Advocate\nFraidy Reiss\, Founder/Executive Director at Unchained At Last
