SUMMARY:Thai El Monte Garment Workers: The Return of Slavery and Trafficking in The Modern Era
DESCRIPTION:At 4 am on August 2\, 1995\, Chanchanit Martorell\, Executive Director of the Thai Community Development Center\, met with government authorities and law enforcement at a doughnut shop in El Monte\, California\, blocks from the slavery compound that they would raid\, a row of apartment duplexes on a residential street\, eerily surrounded by barbed wire. The US Department of Labor\, California Labor Commission\, California Employment Development Department\, Cal-OSHA\, federal marshals\, and the El Monte police participated in the raid. \nThai CDC mobilized a coalition of nonprofit organizations\, attorneys\, and community members to offer shelter\, food and clothing\, medical care\, jobs\, and legal services to the workers following their liberation.\n\nThe Thai workers had labored for 18 or more hours every day inside rat-infested buildings where they lived crammed into bedrooms with ten of their fellow slaves. Their captors controlled them by confiscating passports\, hiring armed guards\, and physically threatening them and their families back home. \nThey made clothes for brand-name manufacturers and nationwide retailers. Garments bore the labels Anchor Blue\, Tomato\, Clio\, B.U.M.\, High Sierra\, Axle\, and others—labels owned by well-known retailers\, such as Miller’s Outpost and Montgomery Ward\, or sold on the racks of Nordstrom\, Sears\, and Target. \nEl Monte was the first recognized case of modern-day slavery in the United States\, leading to the passage of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act in the year 2000. This exhibition tells the story of the case from the perspective of the survivors\, featuring their testimonies\, images and maps of the compound\, and other artifacts. \n(June 10- September 5 2021)

SUMMARY:Together to End Child Labour: A high-level event to mark the International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour
DESCRIPTION:In July 2019\, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted resolution 73/327 declaring 2021 as the International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour. The resolution invites Member States and other stakeholders to observe the International Year through activities aimed at raising awareness of the importance of eliminating child labour and to share best practices in this regard. At a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has increased uncertainties for children and their families\, it is crucial for the international community to build momentum for advocacy and action to eliminate child labour. \nSignificant strides have been made in the fight against child labour over the past two decades. However\, despite a 38% reduction between 2000 and 2016\, over 152 million children were in child labour in 2017\, almost half of them in hazardous occupations or conditions. The COVID-19 pandemic further threatens to push millions more into the workforce\, as job losses and sharp declines in household income are hitting already vulnerable families\, putting pressure on children to contribute. The fight against the COVID-19 pandemic has thus effectively become intertwined with protecting the rights of every child. \n2021 will therefore be critical for global efforts against child labour. To this end\, Luxembourg\, the European Union\, the ILO and UNICEF will convene a virtual high-level event to mark the International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour on 11 June 2021\, ahead of the World Day against Child Labour. The high-level event will be an opportunity to discuss best practices in the elimination of child labour as well as recommit to ending child labour in all its forms by 2025 in line with Target 8.7 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The high-level event will also be an opportunity for countries to share progress on the Action Pledges they have made in connection with the International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour.

SUMMARY:A Growing Problem: The Pandemic’s Impact and the Challenge of Child Labor in Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:The Covid-19 crisis brought the unprecedented loss of jobs and income for millions of families and massive school closures\, forcing many children to enter the workforce. Please join the Child Labor Coalition and the International Labour Organization (ILO)/DC for an informative virtual event\, “A Growing Problem: The Pandemic’s Impact and the Challenge of Child Labor in Agriculture\,” featuring the release of new ILO estimates of global child labor and a new Human Rights Watch (HRW) report based on children newly forced into child labor in Uganda\, Ghana\, and Nepal. We will explore solutions to the growing child labor numbers\, as well as discuss the role race plays in child labor. We take a deeper dive into child labor in agriculture—where the majority of child laborers work. We will hear from a young survivor of child labor on American farms\, a leader in the fight to fix America’s flawed child labor laws\, a child labor expert on the challenges presented by West Africa’s cocoa sector\, and a Ghanaian union leader working to create an environment that prevents child labor.
