SUMMARY:The Impact of Covid-19 on Human Trafficking in Sudan
DESCRIPTION:Join us to discuss the findings from our joint research project investigating the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on modern slavery and human trafficking in Sudan. This event will launch the project report The Impacts of Covid-19 on Human Trafficking in Sudan: A Case Study of Transition. \nWhen the Covid-19 pandemic hit\, Sudan was in the midst of a democratic transition\, involving the reconstruction of state institutions\, development of new laws and a commitment to ensuring the protection of human rights. Yet\, despite the commitment\, these activities faced the obstacles of economic strain\, limited resources and the ongoing need to prioritise peace and stability in the country. Covid-19 exacerbated these obstacles and presented substantial new challenges to improving its anti-slavery response. This research reveals the emerging impacts of the pandemic on modern slavery and human trafficking operating within\, through\, and from Sudan\, and makes recommendations to help mitigate the negative consequences of the virus. \nAt the event\, the project team will provide an introduction to the project and research findings. \nDiscussion will open with reflections from the survivor experience\, based on the contributions of survivors involved in the development of the project recommendations and outputs. Ahmed Alsir will be present to share this perspective. \nThis will be followed by a series of reflections focused on the implications of the research in different sectors of policy\, advocacy\, and programming activity. Speakers will include Maha Arzag\, National Committee to Counter Trafficking (Sudan)\, Hamad Al-Jazouli\, National Ribat University in Khartoum and Senior Advisor for Asylum and Migration at the African Center for Peace and Governance\, Amira Azhary Director of the Child Protection Department in National Council for Child Welfare (Sudan)\, and Jérôme Tubiana\, researcher specialised on conflict and migration. \nThe panel discussion will be followed by a moderated Q&A session. \nThe event will take place on Zoom\, with Zoom details shared with registered attendees in due course. The session will be recorded\, and made publicly available online after the event. \nThe event will be available in both English and Arabic\, with simultaneous interpretation. \nConfirmed speakers: \nAmira Azhary is the Director of the Child Protection Department in National Council for Child Welfare (NCCW) and is the official representative of the NCCW within the National Committee of Combating trafficking. Amira works to ensure children are properly protected from trafficking offences. \nHamad Al-Jazouli is the former refugee coordinator in Sudan and now professor at the National Ribat University in Khartoum and senior advisor for asylum and migration at the African Center for Peace and Governance. He held the position of refugee coordinator for Sudan from 2012 to 2019 and during this period he managed local\, regional and international partnerships to support Sudan’s efforts with asylum seekers\, immigration\, combatting smuggling and human trafficking. \nDr. Jerome Tubiana is a researcher specializing in conflicts and migration across the Sahara and Horn of Africa contexts. Over the past 20 years\, he has worked in conflict areas of Sudan\, Chad\, Niger\, Libya\, South Sudan and the Central African Republic\, including for the United States Institute of Peace\, the Small Arms Survey\, the International Crisis Group\, the Clingendael Institute\, Médecins Sans Frontières and other humanitarian NGOs as well as the UN Security Council Panel of Experts on the Sudan\, the African Union–United Nations Joint Mediation Support Team and the US Agency for International Development. In addition to various reports\, he is the author of several books including Chroniques du Darfour (Glénat\, 2010) and Guantánamo Kid (SelfMadeHero/Abrams\, 2019). His articles have appeared in Foreign Policy\, Foreign Affairs\, the London Review of Books\, Le Monde diplomatique and XXI. \nRobert Fairweather is the UK Special Representative for Sudan and South Sudan\, a post he has held since 2019. He has served as a British diplomat since 1997. \nMaha Arzag has been a legal adviser at the Ministry of Justice of Sudan and with the National Committee for Combatting Trafficking (NCCT) under the Ministry since 2015.
