Frank Dawtry annual memorial lecture 2021 – Dame Sara Thornton
The Centre for Criminal Justice Studies is delighted that this year’s Frank Dawtry Memorial lecture will be delivered by Dame Sara Thornton. In this lecture, Dame Sara Thornton will be speaking about the following points which are focused on the theme “Policing Modern Slavery.”
• Modern slavery in the UK and the Commissioner’s role
• Treating modern slavery as serious organised crime
• UK policing structures and approach to modern slavery
Dame Sara Thornton has worked in policing since 1986, when she joined the Metropolitan Police. During her 33 year career within policing she served as Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police from 2007 until 2015 and was appointed the first Chair of the NPCC in 2015. She has also received the Queen’s Police Medal and, in 2011, was awarded a CBE.
Dame Sara Thornton is the current UK’s Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner. She was appointed by the Home Secretary at the time, Sajid Javid, in succession to Kevin Hyland who left the post in May 2018.
