COTTON IS SOFT, FORCED LABOUR IS NOT
December 10, 2020 @ 10:00 pm - 11:15 pm UTC-5Free
State-organised forced labour still exists in the growing of cotton. These stats may scare you but hopefully also motivate you:
Of the top 10 cotton growing countries in the world – only Australia has no reported incidences of forced or child labour
Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan have been using their citizens as forced labour to grow and harvest cotton
It is estimated that as many as 1 in 5 garments sold in the US have been tainted with state-organised forced labour of the Uighur people in China
We will hear from the ground what is happening in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan from Allison Gill from The Cotton Campaign and Ruslan Myatiev from Turkmen.news. Since 2007, this coalition (which Be Slavery Free is a part of) has been campaigning for an end to state enforced forced labour in harvesting some of the largest cotton crops in the world.
Hear from Mabel Wong who will share ELEVATE’s experience supporting brands and retailers identify and respond to risks associated with forced labour in their supply chains.
Then the good news! Outland Denim has been building a sustainable and slavery-free cotton supply chain in Turkey. They will share why they are doing this and how to rebuild a supply chain.
