Climate change, modern slavery and a just transition

Climate change and environmental destruction have profound implications for human rights and are driving vulnerability to modern slavery. People who are already among the most vulnerable are particularly hard-hit.

Climate action needs to happen fast, but it also needs to be participatory and fair. This is where the growing agenda around a ‘just transition’ to a zero-carbon future comes in, with a particular focus on respecting the rights of people on the frontline of climate impacts.

Opening Remarks:

  • Jennifer Townson, UK Modern Slavery Envoy, FCDO

Panellists:

  • Dr Chris O’Connell, Postdoctoral CAROLINE Fellow with Dublin City University and Anti-Slavery International in London
  • Carolina Rudnick, Director of LIBERA, an NGO working against human trafficking and slavery in all its forms in Chile

  • Fran Witt, Climate Change and Modern Slavery Advisor, Anti-Slavery International
